Membership Questions

Q: What is a credit union?

A: A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that is owned by its members. Unlike other financial institutions, a credit union has no stockholders to pay, so all profit made is returned to the members in the form of improved services, higher dividends, and low loan rates. A credit union is democratically controlled by a volunteer Board of Directors that is elected by the members. Founded on the philosophy of “people helping people”, credit unions also have a commitment to serve the community in which they preside.

Q: How do I join NWGACU?

A: All you need to do is open a share (savings) account with at least $25.00. As long as you keep $25.00 in your account, you are a member for life, even if you move or change jobs. This also gives you full, free access to everything we offer, like free checking, eBranch, low-rate loans, and more. To open your savings account, you will need to bring a government-issued picture ID (e.g. driver’s license, military ID card) and your social security card.

Loan Questions

Q: How do I apply for a loan?

A: First time borrowers need to complete an Open-End Credit Plan Agreement and a loan application.
You can stop by one of our offices, apply online, or call the credit union and request a copy by mail. Subsequent loan requests require an update form that can be faxed, or in some instances, we can take the information over the phone.

Q: What kinds of things does the credit union look for when deciding to approve a loan?

A: At NWGACU, we look at a variety of factors. Employment history, amount of total debt, credit score, the purpose of the loan, and your relationship with the credit union are some of the key elements of a loan decision. Credit unions are unique in that our loan decisions are made on more of a case-by-case, personal basis; you are more than just a number to us.

Q: How long do I have to be a member before I can apply for a loan?

A: You may apply for a loan as soon as you join the credit union. As long as you keep $25 in your share (savings) account, you have immediate and full access to all of our products and services.

Q: How long will it be before I know if I was approved for a loan?

A: At NWGACU, we work diligently to provide fast and uniquely personal service. In most cases, you will know something within 24 hours.
